Log Home Caulking
Cracks within the wood are called “checks,” and naturally, the wood develops cracks and checks as they dry and age. These afflictions need to be sealed to prevent permanent damage to the structural integrity of your home. Upward-facing checks will collect and hold water, creating the possibility of rot with an increased moisture content of the log. The higher moisture level causes an increase in the presence of carpenter ants and other insects. If the checks are present on the bottom half of logs, sealing is not required as the water will typically drain. If a check is less than ¼” wide, sealing can be avoided as they are usually too small to hold and accumulate water.
